This arrangement came with a couple of requirements when I started: Be relaxed, and be easier on the lower instruments. The one-person string orchestra recording the track—Andrew Steffen / AKA ETHEReal String Orchestra—was stronger on viola and violin; which meant I could give them more to work with on the higher end, but had to be careful not to get too complicated on cello and bass. I think this limitation lends itself well to the initial goal of being relaxed, so with this in mind, I approached the piece looking for the feeling of Charlie Brown-meets-Mister Rogers channeling Vince Guaraldi & Johnny Costa in my arranging. The final details that help give it that musical identity are the dusting of improvised and loose piano bits recorded by myself.
